On 4/1/18 at approximately 2147 hrs., the North Coventry Twp. Police Department responded to the area of Route 422 east and MM 173.4 on the report of a possible one vehicle crash. It had been reported that a black Ford pickup had been observed swerving and driving recklessly on Route 422 east prior to MM 173.3. Upon arrival police observed a black Ford pickup truck (Unit #1), disabled in the Armand Hammer Exit lane. Police investigation revealed that Unit #1, operated by William Carey, 49, of Pottstown (Opr. #1) was traveling on Route 422 east at a high rate of speed. Based on vehicle damage and witness statements it was found that Unit #1 failed to negotiate the left curve in the roadway on Route 422 east at MM 173.3 and struck the center and outer concrete barriers. Unit #1 sustained functional driver's side and passenger's side damage. Unit #1 sustained disabling damage to the front tires and front wheel rims. Opr. #1 failed field sobriety testing, was taken into custody, and requested to submit to a blood drawn for laboratory analysis. Opr. #1 refused to submit to a blood draw. Opr. #1 was charged with PMVC 3802(a)(1) driving under influence of alcohol or controlled substance, PMVC 3714(a) careless driving, and PMVC 3746(a)(2) failure to notify police of an accident with disabling damage to vehicle.
