On 05/09/2020, at 2207 hrs. NCPD responded to 307 S. Hanover St. on the report of a one vehicle crash into a tree. It was reported that the driver was unresponsive and that EMS was enroute. Upon Police arrival the driver, Jay Douglas Ehrhart Jr. was sitting on the front steps of 307 S. Hanover St. His vehicle was facing west against a large tree. Police spoke with Ehrhart who advised that he was traveling from Boyertown PA to Phoenixville PA and fell asleep. Ehrhart appeared confused and did not provide any other information as to how the crash occurred. While speaking with Ehrhart, Police observed that his pupils were constricted, he had droopy eyelids, and he appeared drowsy. Ehrhart was then seen by Goodwill Ambulance. Ehrhart refused treatment and or transport to a hospital by Goodwill Ambulance. While in the ambulance Police observed that Ehrhart's pupils were constricted and that they did not react to light. Ehrhart later admitted to using narcotics earlier in the evening and he submitted to field sobriety testing. Ehrhart was taken into custody for driving under the influence of a controlled substance, and later refused to submit to a formal blood test. Police investigation revealed that unit #1 was traveling west on E. Main St. at a slow rate of speed, crossed west, over both north and south bound lanes of S. Hanover St., struck a tree at 307 S. Hanover St. and came to rest. Unit #1 sustained minor front end damage. Opr. #1, Ehrhart, appeared to be driving under the influence of a controlled substance and was taken into custody. Unit #1 was towed from the scene subject to arrest. Ehrhart was charged with PMVC 3802(d)(2) DUI: Controlled Substance (3rd offense), and PCC 35 13 A32 Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
