Two vehicle crash
On 12/13/2018 at 0659 hrs., The North Coventry Twp. Police Dept. responded to the intersection of Route 724 (AKA E. Schuylkill Rd.) and S. Hanover St. on the report of a two vehicle crash. Upon Police arrival both vehicles were found facing south / east, blocking the south / east corner of the intersection. Both operators and all passengers were standing outside of the vehicles. One operator and two passengers advised of various pain and Goodwill Ambulance and Norco Fire Rescue were requested to respond. Norco Fire Police were also requested to respond to assist with traffic control.
Police investigation revealed that unit #1, operated by Matthew L. Gilbert, of Berwick, was traveling west on Route 724. Unit #2, operated by Daniel Castillo-Garcilazo, of Reading, was traveling east on Route 724. At the intersection of Route 724 and S. Hanover St. Unit #1 was stopped in the left turn only lane. As the traffic signal turned yellow, unit #1 intending to turn left entered the intersection turning left (south) failing to yield the right-of-way to all oncoming traffic. Unit #2 continued east through the intersection under a yellow traffic signal and struck unit #1. Both units then struck utility pole #320 as they came to rest on the south/east corner of the intersection. Opr. #1 advised of general pain and weakness and was transported to the Pottstown Hospital by Goodwill Ambulance. Unit #2 front seat passenger advised of stomach general pain. Unit #2 rear seat passenger advised of a cut upper lip. Both unit #2 passengers were seen by Goodwill Ambulance but refused treatment and transportation. No other injures were reported at the time of the crash. Both units sustained disabling front end damage and were towed from the scene. Peco was advised of utility pole #320 being struck and requested to check the pole for structural stability. Opr. #1 was cited for PMVC 3322 vehicle turning left.
