Vehicle vs. Pedestrian crash
On 4/13/19, at 1737 hours the North Coventry Twp. Police Dept. responded to the Lowe's store located at 1136 Town Square Rd. on the report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle. Police were advised that Goodwill Ambulance and the Norco Fire Co. were also dispatched to this scene. Upon police arrival the crash scene was found to be at the Lowe's Lumber Yard pick area. Police found a Lowe's employee, William L. Sander, of Pottstown, laying face down on the ground. Sander had a visible serious injury to his lower left leg. Police observed a blue Subaru Outback, bearing PA registration KYC5423 facing south/west at the south side of the carport. The operator, Nancy Tashner, of Parker Ford, advised of various pain and police requested a second Goodwill Ambulance to respond.
.Police investigation revealed that the pedestrian was an employee of Lowe's and was in the pick up carport area of the store. The pedestrian was standing in front of a pallet of concrete bags, to assist Opr. #1 (Tashner), a Lowe's customer, with the pick up and loading of several bags of concrete. Unit #1 was backing up (north/east) to the pallet of concrete bags when Opr. #1's sandal type shoe got stuck on or wedged against the accelerator pedal. Unit #1 accelerated backwards striking the pedestrian and the pallet of concrete. Unit #1 then accelerated forward (south/west) and struck a carport support pillar. The pedestrian sustained a serious injury to the lower left leg and was transported to the Reading Hospital by Goodwill Ambulance. Opr. #1 was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and struck the windshield of Unit #1. Opr. #1 sustained unknown injuries and was transported to the Pottstown Hospital by Goodwill Ambulance. Unit #1 sustained functional rear end damage, disabling front end damage and was towed from the scene. Opr. #1 was cited for PMVC 3714(C) Careless Driving.
