The Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department and the United States Postal Inspectors are investigating a series of thefts from mailboxes that have occurred in East Goshen Township on Bancroft Drive, Cooper Circle, and Lochwood Lane. Three separate thefts have occurred which resulted in victim’s having their checks fraudulently used.
The Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department was able to review surveillance footage from a victim’s residence which showed the victim placing a check in their mailbox and extending the red mailbox flag signifying mail needs to be picked up. Approximately thirty minutes later, a newer vehicle depicted in the attached image was observed stopping at the mailbox and the passenger removing the mail. It was later discovered by the victim that a check that was placed in the mailbox had been stolen and fraudulently used in Pennsylvania and New York.
The United States Postal Inspectors advised that this type of action is usually done by the “red flag bandits” who typically drive through residential neighborhoods looking for mailboxes which have red flags extended signifying that mail is in the mailbox for outgoing mail.
The Westown-East Goshen Regional Police Department would like to remind residents to take precautions when placing items in their mailbox.
