Law enforcement and other first responders frequently have contact with residents with communication, cognitive, and physical needs that can make providing services more difficult. Emergencies often create high anxiety, excitement, and physical demands, thus exacerbating these pre-existing conditions.
To proactively address these needs and provide some sense of relief, the Downingtown Police Department has launched the 'Handle with Care' initiative. This initiative is designed to better assist our residents with special needs and ensure they receive the support they deserve.
The "Handle with Care" Registry empowers residents to share crucial information with our department. This includes details about Autism, Alzheimer's, Dementia, Elder Care, or any other cognitive or physical condition that may require specific attention or assistance in an emergency. By sharing this information, you are taking control of your safety and giving our officers the tools they need to assist you effectively.
The data collected will provide officers with the information they need to help a "Handle with Care" resident without their caregiver, who may have wandered from home or who otherwise needs assistance. This information will be used responsibly and respectfully, ensuring the privacy and dignity of the resident. All information in the registry will be held in strict confidence.
We encourage all residents with special needs or their caregivers to register for the "Handle with Care" initiative. Your participation can make a significant difference in your safety and well-being. The Downingtown Police Department also encourages you to submit information to Smart911. Smart 911 is a free service that allows individuals and families to create a safety profile online, providing key information to Chester County's 9-1-1 Center. Safety profiles can be created at www.smart911.com.
