Law enforcement and other first responders frequently have contact with residents with communication, cognitive, and physical needs that can make providing services more difficult. Emergencies often create high anxiety, excitement, and physical demands, thus exacerbating these pre-existing conditions.
To proactively address these needs and provide some sense of relief, the Downingtown Police Department has launched the 'Handle with Care' initiative. This initiative is designed to better assist our residents with special needs and ensure they receive the support they deserve.
The "Handle with Care" Registry empowers residents to share crucial information with our department. This includes details about Autism, Alzheimer's, Dementia, Elder Care, or any other cognitive or physical condition that may require specific attention or assistance in an emergency. By sharing this information, you are taking control of your safety and giving our officers the tools they need to assist you effectively.
The data collected will provide officers with the information they need to help a "Handle with Care" resident without their caregiver, who may have wandered from home or who otherwise needs assistance. This information will be used responsibly and respectfully, ensuring the privacy and dignity of the resident. All information in the registry will be held in strict confidence.
We also encourage you to submit information to Smart911. Smart911 is a free service that allows individuals and families to create a safety profile online, providing key information to Chester County’s 9-1-1 Center. It is completely secure and private. Registrants control what information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in an emergency situation. The safety profile enables faster and more effective emergency response by law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services. Safety profiles can be created at www.smart911.com. Residents can customize their profile and share any information they want the 9-1-1 call taker and response teams to have in the event of an emergency. The information is seen only when the resident dials 9-1-1 and it is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing him or her to send the right response team to the right location with the right information.
