Chief Greenwalt began his Law Enforcement career in 1998 at Widener University’s Campus Safety Department until being hired by the Brookhaven Borough Police Department in 2001. In early 2002, Greenwalt was hired by the City of Chester Police Department and assigned to the patrol division. While employed by Chester Police, Greenwalt was certified as a field training officer and a member of the city’s SWAT team.
Chief Greenwalt was the recipient of a Merit award for outstanding duties in 2003 for his role in apprehending two burglary suspects in the act. Shortly after in 2006, Greenwalt received a Medal of Valor for his courageous actions during an officer-involved shooting in which the actor sustained several gunshot wounds and was apprehended. Later on, Greenwalt was recognized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with an award for his role in the arrests of several subjects operating a heroin ring. He was named the City of Chester’s Police Officer of the year just before being hired by the New Garden Township Police Dept in December of 2007.
After being hired by New Garden Township, Greenwalt served in the capacity of Police officer until being promoted to Corporal in April of 2011 where he was the senior patrol supervisor. Greenwalt was the department’s Taser and Firearms instructor until being promoted to the rank of Sergeant in January 2017. That same year he designed the department’s first Community Services Division which was responsible for all community outreach programs, department training, FTO program, fleet maintenance, professional standards, and quality of life concerns.
In 2017, Greenwalt attended and graduated from the extensive New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police Command and Leadership Academy. Greenwalt is a certified instructor for Chester County’s Active Threat program and holds an instructor certificate for the designing of Simunition scenarios used to improve upon the skills of the officers by placing them in real life critical incidents as well as discussing areas for improvement and proper response methods.
Greenwalt was the recipient of the 2014 Gerald W. Davis award and a three-time recipient of the DUI award and most recently, in 2016 was awarded for his role in saving the life of a suicidal subject
In 2020 he received the Department’s Meritorious Service Award for valiantly moving the agency into an Accredited status in just 18 short months.
Greenwalt was the Patrol Division Commander until he attended and successfully graduated from the 280th session of the FBI National Academy in December of 2021. Upon his return, Greenwalt served the department as the Criminal Investigations/Administrative Lieutenant.
In December of 2022, Chief Greenwalt was named Acting Chief of police upon the retirement of Chief Gerald Simpson. On July 13th, 2023 at the regularly scheduled PSC Meeting, the Public Safety Commission officially selected Joseph Greenwalt as the Department's new Chief of Police.
Chief Greenwalt believes that being approachable and accessible to members of the community is an effective and necessary method to solving problems and building upon relationships and public trust. He also strives to provide a positive and motivational workplace for the members of the department which further commits them to provide the best service to the community as possible. Chief Greenwalt is a resident of Southern Chester County and possesses a vested interest in Law Enforcement service to the area.
