In the tumultuous days following the unconscionable display of disgraceful policing in Minneapolis; this country and the Floyd family mourn George’s unnecessary and tragic death. Our country grieves on many levels from the police officers’ treatment of Mr. Floyd and their complete disregard for human life.
As a civilized society, we must acknowledge the blatant wrong, identify the cause of such behavior, and demand accountability, justice, and change. As a police department, we empathize with those impacted by injustice and recognize their legitimate feelings of frustration, discrimination, and exclusion.
The true purpose of these peaceful protests, gatherings, and demonstrations is to bring proper attention and recognize the unacceptable and tragic circumstances that must not be overshadowed by the lawlessness and criminal behavior that followed. Dangerous riots, looting, and violent behavior are the result of very few people using this tragic opportunity to advance their own agenda and only serve to undermine the positive awareness and solidarity that may be peaceably forged.
I am truly ashamed to be professionally associated with undignified and disgraceful policing, as demonstrated in Minneapolis. The dishonorable behavior displayed by those responsible, or those found to be complicit, demonstrates a complete disconnect from moral behavior, which has no place in legitimate ethical policing. It is reprehensible that a police officer does not actively protect a life in peril. Such failures are indicative of the lack of integrity, failed policies and deficient training and standards.
We are deeply saddened by this display of disgraceful policing. We fully support those who demand that all parties be held accountable (criminally and civilly) for their actions and for their failures to act when they had a clear duty to do so.
