FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION IN

THORNBURY TOWNSHIP, CHESTER COUNTY

 On Monday Oct. 28, 2019 at 3:38 PM, the Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department was dispatched to the 1200 block of East Street Road in Thornbury Township, Chester County for an auto accident.

Members of the Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department arrived on location to find a commercial vehicle overturned and the driver from that vehicle trapped under the truck. The driver of a second vehicle with heavy front end damage was also trapped in her vehicle.

Members of Goshen Fire Company were able to extricate the driver of the truck who was in cardiac arrest. The male driver was transported by Goshen Ambulance to Paoli Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the 2014 Nissan Rogue SUV, a 71 year old female from West Chester, was able to self-extricate herself from the vehicle. She was transported to Paoli Hospital where she was treated and released later in the evening.

Police determined that William Murphy, age 42, from Turnersville, New Jersey was operating the 2010 Freightliner commercial vehicle eastbound on East Street Road when the truck left the roadway. When Murphy attempted to return the vehicle to the paved road surface, the truck rolled on its side.  Murphy, who was not wearing a seatbelt was ejected from the vehicle. The commercial vehicle crossed the center of the roadway and collided with the Nissan Rogue that was traveling westbound.

At the time of the accident the weather was clear and the roadway was dry. East Street Road was closed for 7 hours during the crash investigation and roadway repairs that were required.

This accident remains under investigation by the Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department.

The police department was assisted by Goshen Fire Company and EMS, Medic 55 Good Fellowship Ambulance, Edgemont Fire Company, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Lewis Environmental, Goshen Fire Police, West Chester Fire Police and Abel Brother’s Towing.
